Eugene, Oregon
Dougherty Landscape Architects crafted the site and landscape for The Nel, a 45-unit, four-story permanent supportive housing development in downtown Eugene, designed by BDA Architecture & Planning and developed by Homes for Good. Serving individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, the building includes ground-floor care provider offices and communal spaces.
The landscape design centers on a secure, intimate courtyard featuring seating areas, raised planters, and benches crafted from reclaimed trees originally removed from the site—strengthening the connection between residents and their environment.
Sustainability and dignity were prioritized: native and adaptive plantings create a resilient, low-maintenance landscape, while integrated stormwater systems enhance ecological performance. The project earned Earth Advantage Platinum certification for its environmental design.
Through thoughtful arrangements of gathering areas, green spaces, and salvaged materials, DLA’s landscape transforms the site into a supportive, welcoming setting that nurtures community, resilience, and well-being.
